Little Bears Pre 1 and Pre 2: We love stories!

It’s not only about Christmas at the moment, Christmas is also a special time for families. We have been exploring “What is a family?” and have listened to stories about different types of families, including animal families.

In the Little Bears class we love stories!  Our Pre 1 Nursery class loves looking at books and has just begun listening to stories told by the teacher.

We are learning how to turn the pages of a book.

Look at the happy baby in this book!

We may also have pets in our family.

“Woof! Woof!” says the dog.

Our Pre 2 Nursery love listening to stories as well, as you can see by their expressions! Stories can take you to an imaginary world where you can be who you want to be; offering a world of fantasy or reflecting real life and evoking emotions and reactions.

They are an important part of language development in young children; helping communication, developing listening skills, extending  vocabulary, developing memory and motivating reading. But most of all they give us pleasure and are FUN.

We have listened to the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears and reenacted it in our own way and through play. Developing our mathematical concepts of size: “big”, “medium” and “little” and quantity: “How many is ‘three’?”

We have listened to the story of The Three Little Pigs and then built houses of “bricks”, sometimes outside, while developing our social skills and collaborating together on a joint project.

We have had great fun acting like the wolf and blowing houses down.

“Little pigs, little pigs. Can I come in ?”

“Oh, no! Not by the hair of our chinny, chin, chins we won’t let you in.”

“Then I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house in.”

Even at the young age of two and three years, children are able to recall and “read” stories that really capture their interest and fire up their imagination. Click on the link to watch and listen to one of our young “readers” who was in Pre 2 in June of this year. He absolutely adored the story that we read in class “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” by Michael Rosen.

The child in the video was motivated  to look at this book, after listening to the story in class, and began “reading” to himself spontaneously. The teacher overheard him and began recording. It is absolutely amazing!
