Reception A: Handa’s Surprise

Reception A have been looking at Handa’s Surprise by Eileen Browne as their class story. We retold the story using some animal masks and fruit props and wrote some simple words and phrases relating to the story.

“Carefully does it!”

“Look, no hands!”

“I can write a sentence about Handa’s Surprise.”

Handa’s Surprise is set in a village in Africa. We were able to look at other areas of the curriculum and had a fun-packed African week. We made some African inspired patterns, did some paintings of Handa for our display board and made some sunset pictures with animal silhouettes on. We even tasted some of the fruits that appear in the story and described them. We also looked at some African rhythms and tried to play them on djembes and danced to a song all about animals from Africa.Click on the following links to see the djembe playing and the animal song.

This was a fun topic, that allowed us to cover all areas of the curriculum. The children were so inspired by this story that there were many examples in their own free play such as making fruits from plasticine, making patterns from shapes and role playing Handa carrying the basket to her friend Akeyo.

Well done Reception A!
