Nursery: Elian’s Early Years: The Gruffalo Part One

The Gruffalo is an amazing creature!

In our story “The Gruffalo”, a mouse is walking through a forest and meets different types of forest creatures. The mouse is frightened of being eaten by them and invents the gruffalo as a make believe creature, but is it make believe or is there really a gruffalo………?

We explored the forest environment…..looking at a variety of leaves, pine cones and grass.

We discovered the names of different animals and had to match the name to the animal.

Look at our super animal masks that we made! Can you guess which animals we are?

We retold the story following a story map and used the “Talk for writing” words and gestures: First, next………………..

…………and finally.

There really was a Gruffalo! We made models of the Gruffalo with it’s orange eyes, green nose, claws and horns.

What a super Gruffalo adventure Nursery!

Pre 1 and Pre 2 Little Bears: Elian’s Early Years: The Awe and Wonder of the World!!

Whilst we always plan for learning, we are also on the look out for spontaneous WOW moments, which take place in young children’s learning.

Through their natural curiosity, young children are keen to explore their environment.  You see the awe and wonder in their eyes when they have just discovered something for the first time — it is just amazing!

What would you do if you saw a beetle for the first time………….?

Watch and listen to these children making discoveries!

Carry on enjoying your first discoveries, Little Bears!

Pre 1 and Pre 2 Little Bears: Elian’s Early Years : Immersion in English

In Little Bears, we are so clever at holding a conversation with our teacher.

In these videos, we show that we have learned how to clean our hands often and to sing the song, This is the way we clean our hands. We’ve learned to listen and join in with a story; to count how many; and to express ourselves when we like something.

We made a graph of how many liked cupcakes. Look at our work……

Good job Little Bears! Super counting and talking to your teacher!

Elian’s Early Years: British Education in the Early Years

Firstly, we would like to wish everybody a safe, healthy and Happy New Year! Despite the world pandemic life still goes on…. as normally as possible, and here at Elian’s British School we have endeavoured to keep our children and staff safe. All our classes have stayed open throughout the autumn term and our attempts to prevent the spread of any infections have been successful so far.

Here, at Elian’s British School of La Nucía, we are very proud of our Early Years Foundation Stage unit, which provides high quality care and education for children between the ages of one and five.

Our team is made up of highly skilled native English speakers and Spanish staff who are passionate about preparing children for future learning and success. We are extremely fortunate to have access to a wide range of wonderful indoor and outdoor facilities in a beautiful setting close to the mountains.

Our British Early Years education has recently been featured in an article by Impuls online magazine. Please enjoy reading more about us: what we have to offer and how we teach. The article is written in English, Spanish and Russian.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again and meeting the new children starting in January!

Pre 1 and 2 Little Bears: Elian’s Early Years: Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Our theme has been “Who lives in my house?” and we have learnt about houses, homes and families. To complete the theme we explored the story of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”  and took our learning journey into the lives of the “Bear family.”

If you go down to the woods today you’re sure of a big surprise………………..

The Three Bears are a very special family! Through them we have developed skills in: counting, ordering objects by size, naming family members, talking about feelings and following the sequence of a story and making story maps.

Here are some of us making our story maps…………….First, next and finally being some key words to following a sequence.

Super work, Little Bears Class!

Pre 1 and 2 Little Bears — Elian’s Early Years: Who lives in my house? Speaking and listening

As part of our theme “Who lives in my house?” we’ve been exploring different types of housing and naming some parts of a house, while also exploring the idea of “What is a family?” and who is in my family.

We’ve made many kinds of houses out of different construction materials, created our own house collage, then put our family photo in and used family play figures to create families in our play.

Most of us are only two years-old and with our teacher, we’ve talked about who is in our family and whether we can name them and name the parts of a house.

Watch the video see it all in action!

Fantastic work Little Bears ! We love our family!

Rec B: Elian’s Early Years : “Talk for Writing”: Telling stories

Friends Forever

Introducing the Talk for Writing approach in our EYFS classes to help us retell stories.

Continuing with our “Alien” adventure, the children in Reception B received a surprise message from their cosmic friend Sporkle, all the way from the planet Twink.

Sporkle asked the children to tell their very own story of the fabulous adventure they had together.

To accomplish this, we used the Talk for Writing approach, which is an engaging teaching framework developed by Pie Corbett. It is powerful because it is based on the principles of how children learn through fun activities and oral rehearsal. Children learn language through memorable, meaningful repetition. The Talk for Writing approach enables children to internalise the language of the story so that they can imitate it, innovate, and create their own effective stories independently.

Together we discussed all the amazing things that had happened with our special friend, building their story step by step, one sentence for each stage.

Then we made our story map to match each one of these stages. Each of the images are accompanied by an action to support language while they are telling the story.

Excitedly, the children practised telling their story with the actions learnt from Talk for Writing until it was ready to send to Sporkle.

The girls and boys of Reception B are very proud to present their story:

 Friends Forever

Rec B are “Superstars” of storytelling!

Rec A : Elian’s Early Years : Spoken-English : Mary Poppins Video

In Reception A, we have been learning the story of Mary Poppins — a magical tale set in London, where flying umbrellas, dancing chimney sweeps, tea parties on the ceiling, and carousel horse races are everyday occurrences!

The story culminates in a family-afternoon of flying kites. Having also learnt the letter “k” In Phonics, we decided to make our own. We made good use of our artistic skills to cut and collage coloured cellophane paper to create our beautiful masterpieces. Having enjoyed trying to fly them to the “highest of heights”, we decided to make our own Mary Poppins display, where our kites are seen flying high above the London skyline — just like in the story. We really wanted to share it with you.

We have also been busy learning lots about London. Have a look at our fantastic spoken-English and our beautiful singing voices.

What a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious time we had!

Nursery : Elian’s Early Years : Ten terrible tigers taste toast, tuna and tomatoes: All about the letter ‘t’

We have been learning a new letter sound: ‘t’

We have done many activities connected with the letter ‘t’.

After reading the story The Tiger Who Came To Tea, we went to look for tigers.

Here we are, going on a tiger hunt and looking for tigers in the trees.

Are there any tigers here……….?

Feeding the troll with ‘t’ cards………tractor, tortoise, table…….

Decorating the letter ‘t’

 Making and counting triangles

Brushing our teeth and talking about how to keep them healthy……..

Playing with trains ………

and the children decided to make their own train! All aboard……

Making toast with tuna and tomato

Playing tennis…….

Who would have thought that the letter ‘t’ could be so much fun!

Well done Nursery!
